  • Would we return? Absolutely — and here’s why

After visiting Vienna and Prague, our trip to Budapest came with a mix of curiosity and excitement. We weren’t trying to compare cities, but naturally, we wondered whether Budapest would carry a similar spirit. Instead, the city surprised us from the very first moment. Budapest felt younger, livelier, and far more dynamic than we expected — a place that instantly pulls you into its rhythm.

Traveling with friends made the experience even more enjoyable, but the real charm came from the city itself. Split into two sides — the calm and quiet Buda vs. the energetic and fast-paced Pest — Budapest showed us two completely different moods within the same trip. Add to that the fact that we barely needed public transport thanks to the city’s walkable layout, and exploring became incredibly easy and relaxing.

Food and prices were another pleasant surprise. After Vienna and Prague, Budapest felt refreshingly affordable, offering delicious meals without stretching the budget. And while Hungarian looked nothing like the languages we knew, getting around with English was still easy enough.

In this post, I’m sharing why we chose Budapest, our first impressions, the unique Buda–Pest contrast, what the city made us feel, and the little things that made it memorable. If you’re planning your first trip to Budapest — or simply love discovering cities on foot — this experience might inspire your own journey.

  1. Traveling With Friends: Why We Chose Budapest

For us, choosing Budapest wasn’t the result of long planning or detailed research — it was simply part of our habit of meeting up with friends in different countries whenever we get the chance. We love picking a new place, coming together, and exploring a city at our own pace. It’s a break from daily life and a fun way to create shared memories. This time, the city where our paths crossed was Budapest.

We didn’t have big expectations or strong assumptions about the city. It was more like, “Let’s meet in Budapest this time — let’s see what kind of place it is.”
Our motivation was simple: spend quality time together in a new country and discover a city we’d been curious about.

But for me personally, this trip carried a bit of extra curiosity. I had recently visited Prague and Vienna, so I had a little question lingering in my mind:
“What kind of city is Budapest? Does it have a similar vibe, or is it something completely different?”

We had a few small but convincing reasons for choosing it: we’d heard it was very walkable, prices were more affordable compared to many European cities, and the whole Buda–Pest split created an intriguing dual identity. And the fact that we didn’t know too much about Hungary added a nice touch of mystery to the trip.

In the end, Budapest turned a simple “let’s meet up with friends” plan into a much more lively, fun, and memorable experience than we expected. What started as a spontaneous idea quickly became one of those moments where we said, “We’re so glad we came.”

  1. Two Sides, Two Souls: Meeting Buda & Pest

One of the most fascinating things about Budapest is realizing that it’s not just one city — it’s actually two different worlds connected by the Danube: Buda and Pest. On the map they look like two simple districts, but once you start walking, you quickly feel that each side has its own distinct personality.

Buda is calm, quiet, and almost meditative. With its hills, historic castles, scenic viewpoints, and slower pace, it instantly gives you a sense of peace. It feels like the part of the city where time moves a bit more gently, offering space to breathe and take in the views from above.

Pest, on the other hand, is lively, energetic, and full of motion. It’s where the restaurants, cafés, bars, and busy streets come together — a side that never really sleeps. From the moment you step into Pest, the city’s fast rhythm pulls you right in.

The contrast became clearest while crossing the bridges between the two sides. With each step, the atmosphere shifted — almost like walking between two different cities within the same trip. The more we explored, the more we noticed how strongly each side expressed its own character.

This duality is what makes Budapest so special. The peaceful charm of Buda and the vibrant energy of Pest balance each other in the best possible way. Moving between these two contrasting moods became one of the things we enjoyed most about the city.

  1. First Impressions: Loud, Lively, and Full of Motion

The moment we stepped into Budapest, the first thing that hit us was the city’s unmistakable energy. Day or night, there’s always movement — people walking, trams passing by, music drifting from cafés, busy streets lighting up every corner. It’s a city that never really settles, yet it doesn’t feel chaotic. Instead, it has a natural rhythm that keeps everything alive.

As we walked around, every street seemed to carry its own pulse. After the calm, fairy-tale vibe of Prague and the elegant order of Vienna, Budapest immediately felt younger, freer, and more spontaneous. This was the moment I thought, “I expected something similar to the others, but this feels completely different.”

During the day, people move with a fast but enjoyable pace; in the evening, the city comes to life even more. Restaurants, bars, squares, and even side streets stay busy, creating a lively atmosphere no matter where you go. It’s as if the city constantly refreshes itself.

This energy meant there was never a dull moment. Every corner revealed something new, every turn introduced a different mood. Budapest quickly became one of those rare cities that feels both vibrant and comfortable to explore at the same time.

  1. Public Transport Exists — But We Barely Needed It

Budapest has a well-connected public transport system with metros, trams, and buses covering almost every part of the city — but our experience turned out quite different. We only used public transport a couple of times, mainly to get from our accommodation to a more central area. After that, we walked everywhere.

Once we reached the center, there was really no need for transportation. The city’s main sights are surprisingly close to each other, and the streets are so easy to navigate that walking quickly became the most practical — and the most enjoyable — way to explore. Every route had something interesting along the way: a square, an old building, a café, a bridge… Walking felt less like a necessity and more like part of the adventure.

Knowing that public transport was always an option was comforting, but what impressed us most was how easy and natural it felt to explore Budapest entirely on foot.

  1. Food & Prices: A Pleasant and Unexpected Surprise

When it came to food, Budapest turned out to be one of the most surprising parts of our trip — in the best way possible. In many European cities, especially after Vienna and Prague, you naturally expect prices to be a bit higher. But Budapest felt refreshingly different: the food was both delicious and genuinely affordable.

Every place we tried offered generous portions, fair prices, and surprisingly good flavors. From street food to sit-down restaurants, we kept finding ourselves saying, “This is amazing for this price.” It was one of those cities where eating out doesn’t feel like a financial decision — it just feels enjoyable.

Hungarian cuisine itself was richer than we expected. Classics like goulash and lángos stood out, but we also came across dishes we’d never heard of yet absolutely loved. The combination of local flavors and solid international options made every meal something to look forward to.

In short, Budapest impressed us not just with how good the food was, but also with how budget-friendly the entire dining experience felt. It was easily one of the most satisfying surprises of the trip.

  1. The Language Shock: Hungarian Was… Something Else

One of the most surprising parts of our Budapest experience was definitely the Hungarian language. Unlike the European languages we’re used to seeing, Hungarian felt like entering a completely different world. The signs, the words, the pronunciation — nothing looked familiar. More than once, we caught ourselves staring at a word thinking, “How do you even say this?”

Trying to guess the meaning of everyday words was impossible, which made the whole thing both funny and confusing. Since Hungarian has a totally different origin and structure, our brains simply couldn’t “decode” anything. It definitely gave us a small, unexpected cultural shock.

The good news? Getting by with English was surprisingly easy. In restaurants, cafés, museums, and most central areas, we always found someone who spoke English, so ordering, asking questions, and getting around never became a problem.

Not understanding Hungarian sometimes turned into a fun little puzzle, while the ease of communicating in English made everything smoother. In the end, this mix of confusion and comfort became one of those memorable details from our Budapest trip.

  1. How the City Made Us Feel

What stood out the most about Budapest was how comfortable and engaging it felt to explore. We never once felt lost or overwhelmed; the streets made sense, the layout was easy to follow, and the city had a natural flow that pulled us in as we walked.

Despite its high energy, Budapest never drained us. We could spend the entire day wandering around and still have the motivation to keep going in the evening. That balance — lively but not exhausting — became one of the things we appreciated most. It wasn’t too quiet, it wasn’t too intense… it was just right.

At some point, we realized that it’s genuinely hard to be bored in Budapest. Every street had movement, every corner held a detail, every square carried a bit of life. Yet none of it felt chaotic; it was more like the city simply breathed on its own.

In short, Budapest made us feel this: A city that’s easy to enjoy, energizing without overwhelming, and surprisingly quick to fall in love with.

It satisfied our curiosity while giving us an experience far warmer and livelier than we expected.

  1. Looking Back on Budapest

When I look back on our time in Budapest, what stays with me is a warm, effortless kind of feeling. The city offered an experience that was neither overwhelming nor too quiet — instead, it struck the perfect balance between energy and comfort. The ease of walking around, the constant desire to keep exploring, and all the little surprises we found along the way… these are the details that make Budapest memorable in hindsight.

Being there with friends made the whole trip even more meaningful. Sharing laughs, wandering the streets, discovering new spots, and trying new flavors — Budapest became one of those cities where the people you’re with blend perfectly with the place itself. Every corner added a new moment, a new memory.

“Would we go back?” Absolutely — without hesitation. Budapest feels like one of those cities that doesn’t reveal everything at once. Each visit promises something new, whether it’s the calm of Buda or the vibrant rhythm of Pest.

In short, Budapest is a place I look back on with a smile — a city that left behind a light, lively, and lasting impression.
